In Sunday’s Dan Drobnick Welding (Schuylkill Haven) Enduro Series events, Steve Stump of Oley captured his first career 4 Cylinder 100-lap win and Shirley Clark of Pine Grove likewise posted her first ever triumph in the 40-lap Ladies Race.
C. Reichert finished fourth in the season opener and aligned from the 20th starting position in Sunday’s 6/8 Cylinder contest. After a thrilling three-wide battle, C. Reichert powered into the runner-up spot on lap 39 behind race leader Brad Krause. The front duo of Krause and C. Reichert remained fairly close throughout the next numerous laps. Suddenly, on lap 77, Krause’s car suffered a broken axle heading out of the second corner and he relinquished the top spot to C. Reichert.
M. Reichert trailed his brother during the contest’s closing moments. Mike pulled alongside of Chris in turn one of lap 80, but remained in second. Mike gained ground through the turns, while Chris showed strength on the straightaways. With five laps remaining, C. Reichert opened his advantage by about three car lengths.
With three laps to go, Terry Kennedy’s #16 lost a wheel betwen turns three and four, which sent his machine rolling over several times. Kennedy’s car was heavily damaged, however, the driver escaped uninjured. This set up a two-lap dash between the Reichert brothers. C. Reichert wasted no time in remaining up front and grabbed his third career Enduro win over current points leader M. Reichert (New Ringgold).
Kerry Fritz (Cressona) started 17th and staged a good battle with veteran endurance competitor Phil Levering (Parkerford). Fritz finished third and Levering took fourth. Second year racer Chuck Long (Kempton) started 12th and captured a career best finish of fifth.
The 4-Cylinder Enduro found seven different drivers taking a shot at the race lead. Defending track champion Kevin Holland made his first start of the season, started 26th and grabbed the race lead on lap 33. He exchanged the spot with the very impressive rookie S. Stump and reclaimed the position on lap 38.
Kevin’s son Chris Holland became the new race leader on lap 67 after a classic battle. Stump moved past K. Holland on lap 79 and chased down the race leader. Stump made his victory bid on lap 97 and survived a scare with a lapped car out of turn four. Stump, in his VW Jetta #4 captured a thrilling victory over Pine Grove based racers C. Holland, K. Holland, and Brad Killian, who each finished on the lead lap. Tony Wetzel (Fleetwood) drove the 3G Racing Team entry to a fifth place effort.
Incidentally, C. Holland set a new 4-cylinder enduro track record during the second half of the 100-lap contest. His runner-up effort combined with an April 18 victory allows him to remain up front in the point standings.
Karen Chase led the opening seven laps of the Ladies Race until Shirley Clark took command. Clark turned in a dominant performance and won the event by a full straightaway. April 18 winner, Shannon Karpulk (Pottsville) was the only other car finishing on the lead lap for the second spot. Chase (Bernville) beat defending champion Jody Brensinger (Orwigsburg) for a third place finish. Jaclyn Bankes (Oneida) survived after three separate turn four spins to finish fifth.
